Quilt backing calculator

Enter your actual quilt measurements, edge allowance and usable fabric width to plan full-width backing panels.

Measurements

Finished quilt top
Backing fabric

Measure after removing selvages.

Each join uses two seam allowances. Check edge allowances with your quilter.

All measurements are in inches. One yard is 36 inches.

Method and assumptions

Backing dimensions = quilt dimensions + twice the edge allowance. Joined span = panels × fabric width − 2 × seam allowance × joins. Yardage = panel count × cut length ÷ 36. Automatic selects the lower-yardage direction.

Usable width excludes selvages. Preparation and print matching need separate allowance. Confirm edge and seam allowances with your quilter.

From quilt measurements to a cutting plan

Enter top dimensions, required extra per edge, usable fabric width and joining allowance. Automatic compares vertical and horizontal full-width panels. Select a direction manually when the print or quilting setup requires it.

Worked calculation: a 60 × 80-inch quilt

For this worked calculation, a 60 × 80-inch top plus 4 inches per edge needs 68 × 88 inches. Two 42-inch panels cut 88 inches long join to 83 × 88 inches with ½-inch seams.

This uses 176 inches, about 4.89 yards, rounded to 5. These figures are separate from your entered project. Preparation and print matching are additional needs. See the full calculation.

Questions about this calculation

Is the seam allowance included?

Yes. Each join consumes two seam allowances, one from each adjoining panel. The calculation subtracts that loss when checking the assembled width.

Does the yardage include batting or binding?

No. This result covers backing fabric only. Batting, binding, fabric preparation, and print matching require separate allowances.

Can I use fabric sold as 108 inches wide?

Yes, but enter its measured usable width. The advertised width may include selvages, and preparation may change the dimensions.
